As the first stage of a three stage project, the Boatshed located in Longbeach Bay in the Marlborough Sounds is neatly tucked in between a significant Pohutukawa tree and the original family bach. Recessive, unassuming and robust against the elements when closed, it is transformed into a family entertainment hub as the doors and hatches open and the interior is revealed.
There was a lot of planning with precise measurements to fit not only the boat and winch, but to provide a specific place for each item that was to be housed. With built in joinery to rival most kitchens, coupled with an impressive sound system, the boat shed is set up as a multi-functional entertainment space and perfect for wider family and friend groups to enjoy.
Logistically this build was very challenging with most materials and concrete having to be delivered by barge. Calculating tides, minimising the time concrete trucks were sitting on the barge and getting the concrete pumped into place all required a lot of effort and planning to get right.
